Hopefully this site will provide all the necessary and important information about lions, including general information about lions, in the "Lions facts" paragraph, and specific information about different kinds of lions such as mountain lions and white lions in the "different lions" paragraph. Be sure to take a look at the Liger and Tigon paragraphs inside the "different lions" as they provide both fascinating and important information about lion hybrids. This site also features pictures of different lions in "lion pictures".
By creating this website we hope to spread awareness and interest about the lion. In addition we want to bring attention to the increasingly threatening situation that lions are currently in, explained in the "Lion extinction" section. Hopefully the awareness will contribute to a better future for lions. We're all big fans of lions and hope that you will be too after exploring this site. We think lions are wonderful creatures that deserve our attention and respect.
In our opinion the world would be a lesser place if lions weren't a part of the ecological system. You may think that only the African people would notice if lions were extinct, however we think differently. African lions are not the only lion, there are different other kinds of lions for example mountain lions. The odds state that you are very likely to run into the word lion, lioness or pictures of lions in your daily life. Since the lion is a symbol of strength, courage and power it can be seen all over society for example in different sport clubs that are called Lion or Lions in some way. If you're not in to sports than maybe you like the movies. Have you noticed the lion roaring as the Hollywood film studio, the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) presents a movie? Would it be the same with a house cat miauing? Of course not!
The lion also has its role in history and religion. The lion has been portrayed in practically all ancient and medieval cultures across Europe, Asia and Africa and were often chosen to be the symbol for royalties. During the medieval (about 5th to 15th century) warriors with a reputation of bravery were nicknamed "Lion", for example Richard I of England also known as Richard the Lionheart. In Ancient Egypt the people viewed the lioness as their goddess of war.
The lion is the biblical symbol of the tribe of Judah and later the Kingdom of Judah. Lions are also featured in the Puranic texts of Hinduism were Narasimaha ("man-lion") a half man, half lion incarnation of Vishnu is worshipped by his devotees and saved the child devotee Prahlada from his father, the evil demon king Hiranyakashipu.
Finally, imagine going on safari in the middle of Africa and seeing the "King of the jungle" live. Can you think of a more powerful sight? It's an experience reserved for a lucky few. Now, imagine going on safari in Africa although not being able to see a lion and hear the guide talk about the lion explains that they are now extinct. It's a sad thing as this may very well happen sometime in the future. However we humans can still prevent this from happening. If we take responsibility and acknowledge the impact we have on the lion population we can help the existing lions to once again flourish. As they once said on "Animal Planet", what would the world be like if we no longer could hear lions roar?
